New year, new whatever
At the beginning of every new year, I get the insatiable urge to brand and rebrand myself. Here’s a list of my 2026 goals, some explained and some not.
My girl doesn’t like my cigarette mouth
I wrote this late at night on December 26, 2025 after going down an Olivia Gatwood rabbit hole. I have to pull out Life of the Party every December. It is the first thing I’ve written just for the sake of it in months, so I’m immortalizing it here. There are a few minor edits but the essence is still here. It is unfinished, of course. I frequently remind myself that things don’t always have to be good; I guess we can call this an exercise.
November favorites
You know what time it is! November was boring.
11. I hate algorithms
Reflect on the entire semester, providing details of three things you learned from the course.
10. Whitney
I didn’t know much about Whitney Houston apart from “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” before watching Whitney in class. To me, the woman was inseparable from her biggest hit. After viewing a detailed review of her imperfections, her desires, her dichotomized identities, I cannot help but be mesmerized by Whitney.
09. What I can see
Facing the end of my undergraduate experience, I’m facing burnout. All of my creative hobbies are taxing; I’m burdened by not knowing my next steps. Work and school are more demanding than ever; I have no motivation to consume, to become inspired, to see what is around me. This is in deep contrast to the standard of productivity I hold myself to. Productivity is heavily intertwined with my self worth. Bad, I know. But I’m only human.
08. The Woman King
Explore the material from our latest topic: stereotypical/iconic representations of Black women.
October favorites
Media diet highlights from October 2025! Some months are slower than others!
07. Cowboys & Superheroes
We've been discussing the evolution of American masculinity and using John Wayne's image as a reference point. With that information in hand, I want you to see out at least one example of a modern version of the John Wayne "passionate manhood" image from a TV show or a film. First, describe the show and character in question so that I can get a good mental picture of your choice; then, explain why the character in question fits the mold of the John Wayne type.
06. Olivia Benson is the model TV lifestyle feminist
Watch another episode from Law. & Order: SVU (Season 27, episode 2 "A Waiver of Consent"); then, in 2-3 paragraphs, answer the following question: "How does this episode portray sexual assault/rape?"
05. September favorites
I always say listing my favorite media feels like uncovering truths about myself, and I love to share what I’m digesting!
Not to have but to hold
I am really good at getting almost everything I want. I, without fail, find boys right after a major heartbreak. Heartbreak like they just lost the girl they thought they were going to marry. I’m a magnet for boys who want me to lay in their bed so they can whisper sweet nothings to me. But it’s not really me they’re talking to. It’s their ex, of course.
04. Southern gotham
I am burdened, haunted, disturbed by the fact that two men were found hanged (lynched) in Mississippi within twenty four hours of each other this past week. It seems their only crimes were being Black and Homeless. Demartravion “Trey” Reed was a student at Delta State University which is in Cleveland, MS. Summer 2024, I spent approximately six weeks in Cleveland working for a boutique hotel less than a mile away from the university campus.
03. Celebrity, art, and politics
Art is not made to be consumed, however Art is inherently political. This is not a new idea, nonetheless it remains controversial. Specifically, when discussing if the artists have a duty to be in political activities, which I find to be arbitrary.
02. On sorority girls
I never thought I would join a sorority, which is not an uncommon testimony among Greek-affiliated women despite the sensationalization of Greek life on social and traditional media. I know you’re into RushTok every year, just like I am. It’s the newest form of reality television, and America can’t look away.
Pretending pretension
I’m a very prideful person. I love to pretend pretension, and in my current emotional state, I am determined to adhere to this practice by diving into my hobbies, education, and friendships in an act of rebellion.
01. There’s no such thing as a chic internet introduction
In our serial-consumer culture, no one talks about just how many internet introductions we endure. Every medium requires a new introduction; never mind that we always follow the same people on every platform.
The Details
Mad Misc. Blog
I have always loved writing, and when I was assigned to create a blog project for class, I inevitably fell in love with blogging. Here, I list my favorite things, my media diet, and all the little things in between!
Gender & Media Blog Project
Students create their own digital website to discuss and analyze their weekly interactions with media content: their media consumption patterns.
e.g., what media they consume, what media content they explore that they would not normally consume, what they notice and how they can tie what they notice back to class lectures, discussions, etc.
